Call for Abstracts: Trans/Masculinities
What would happen if Masculinity Studies began to acknowledge liminal masculinities and the emergent field of Transgender Studies? How would this shift presumptions of what masculinity means and how it is conventionally addressed in this field of gender research? Masculinity Studies has so far almost without exception taken the cis male subject as its denominator.
For a special issue of NORMA: International Journal for Masculinity Studies, co-editors Wibke Straube (Karlstad University, Sweden) and Lucas Gottzén (Stockholm University, Sweden) invite abstracts to be considered on the topic “Trans/Masculinities.” Empirical, theoretical or methodological papers are welcomed, that address the potential of Transgender Studies as much as its challenge of the field of Masculinity Studies and attempt to find common areas of inquiry and mutual knowledge production in such conventionally divided arenas. Submissions can address various non-hegemonic positions of masculinity e.g., female masculinities, genderqueer masculinities or trans* masculinities and address the ontological as much as epistemological questions towards Masculinity Studies. Papers are welcomed from all social science and humanities areas, but should be of broad enough scope for an interdisciplinary readership. Contributions from the global South are particularly welcomed.
Interested authors should send in a 250-word abstract and 200-word biography to wibke.straube@kau.se by March 25th, 2016. Notification of acceptance can be expected before April 1st, 2016. Full paper submission (5000- 7000 words) is due by May 25th, 2016. Review responses will follow in mid-August. Accepted and revised final papers (5000-7000 words) are due October 1, 2016.
